San Marcos Preserves and Trails Foundation was founded by Alison and Michael Stanton, a husband-and-wife team brought together by a shared love for nature, community, and purpose. What began as a simple activity to reconnect as their children grew more independent soon blossomed into something far greater—a nonprofit devoted to preserving open spaces, enhancing public trails, and promoting responsible stewardship of San Marcos’ natural beauty.
Michael, an avid camper and passionate hiker, has spent over a decade volunteering with the YMCA’s Adventure Princesses program, instilling outdoor values in the next generation. Alison, who turned to nature during a time of personal healing, discovered how deeply restorative time outdoors could be—especially when facing mental health challenges.
Together, Alison and Michael believe in the power of nature to connect, heal, and inspire. As climate action advocates, they are committed to protecting the environment not only for today’s residents, but for generations to come.
Whether you're a fellow nature lover, concerned citizen, or simply looking to explore the trails—welcome. We’re glad you’re here.
